Black Star Power
In my last post I mentioned how MTV is the generation latest music channel, another network that is watched by millions of teenagers all over the world is BET (black entertainment television). This show was established in 1979 and primarily for African Americans to watch. The BET slogan is "Black Star Power". In some ways MTV and BET are a like. BET has some reality shows but not as many as MTV. BET plays all R&B, Rap, and soul music, and on Sunday's they play Gospel music, they don't play Rock or pop music. BET also give news on what’s happening in the African American community, not only news about rappers and other celebrities, but they talk about problems in Africa, breast cancer, and how HIV AIDS is the number one killer in African American women. Black history Month is one of the biggest celebration months on BET. They take black History Month very seriously, and they educate viewers about black history. BET has a global impact on African American adults and teenagers around the world. The number of viewers watching BET is getting larger each day.

The Show Of Today's Generation

MTV is the show of today's generation; MTV has been around since 1983. This show has had a massive impact on today's society. Youth view this show as the bible for today's entertainment world. MTVdoes not play just one type of music but plays multiple types of music such as Pop, rap,r&b,heavy metal and rock. This show has major staying power, not only do they offer real news and music, but they offer numerous types of reality shows such as The Real World, Road Rules, True Life, Laguna beach, and a new reality show called Two A Days which is about the best football team in the nation that play for Hover high school but they still struggle as teens to get through the gossip and pains of senior year. My point is every generation had their show that represented them and the times, for us it's MTV, the 50's it was The Johnny Otis Show in the 60's it was American Band Stand, and for the 70's and 80's it was Soul Train. It will be interesting to see what show will capture the next generation, Who knows, it might still be MTV, but its hard to imagine another show capturing our time as good as MTV did, but as long as you have teens music and celebrities their will aways be future MTV's in America.

Television and Society

The Cosby's



A television show that sticks out in my mind that had a impact on society is the Cosby's. This show put African American families in a new light, no one on this show was on drugs, no one had a drinking problem and no one on this show was poor. This show was about a African American middle class family who were dealing with everyday issues. The two primary care givers were a doctor and a lawyer who were making more than enough to take care of their family, which was different than what you would usually see. The mother Patricia Rashad was not your typical "sit at home wife" she had a career and still managed to be their for all of her children. Since this show women are now viewed not only as house wives but also the providers too.




The Simpson's
The Show The Simpson's had a Major impact on society mainly because it was the family that people dreaded to have. I believe that this show is one of the last honest shows on T.V., even thought it's not the most appropriate for kids to watch. The Simpson's are handling problems that go on in the world today, They just handle it with a little bit more humor. I think the reason why the T.V show was made in cartoon was to give the show humor too. The trouble maker is the son, Bart. People think of Bart as this terrible boy who likes to terrorize things but isn't that how all younger boys act at his age. I admit some of the things he does is a little extreme but if you pay attention to his character closely he isn't so different from the younger boy who lives down the block or around the corner from you.



Sex and the City
The Show Sex and the City also had a big impact on society and women around the world, finally here is a show that says its okay to be in your 30's or middle age and not have it all planned out yet. Even though you are in your 30's and 40's you can still be successful and have fun like you were in your 20's. If you think about the character Samantha she was in her 40's and still not married and she didn't see need for a husband. She didn't let her age influenced the way she lived her life. Her character made it clear that it's okay to be forty and be free and proud with your sexual and sensual side. Also their is no denying the effect this show had on fashion, women were buying Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Chew shoes everywhere!

Howard Stern
I only really listen to the radio for music, and the only station I listen too is 106.1 Kmel. Even though I don't listen to Howard stern religiously, I have heard him speak before. When I first heard him speak he's was making fun of celebrities. I said to my self, "Wow! he's really a a**hole", but now I think He's just saying what everybody is thinking in the back of their mind, and he has the courage to say it. Sometimes he can be a bit rude and graphic, but he's really just telling the truth and putting a funny twist to it. I think that Howard Stern had a huge impact on the development of radio. I remember Ms.Buchwitz saying that Howard Stern will go down in history whether you liked him or not. I feel the same way. Even thought his show is not doing well in ratings right now, I think that he will always be remembered by is controversial topics. In Howard stern's case I don't know whether he's famous or infamous, but I guess you can argue both depending on how you view Howard Stern. Even thought I don't listen to his show, I like the fact that Howard Stern is anything but phony and he just says what he feels.

A Face in the Crowd (Movie Review)

In The world of Hollywood today. The movie industry has left long-lasting impressions to the public, from their over the top special effects in actions movies to their gut busting funny comedies, but it is rare that you find a film that embodies some of these genres. It seems to be that today movies have lost a certain excitement to them, so you end up not being happy with what you paid for, and the movie ends up being a flop. In the case of the movie “A face in the Crowd” it has both comedy, drama and suspense. Even though the movie shows in black And white the overall storyline is well written. Reporter Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal) Interviews the towns drunken hobo Larry 'Lonesome' Rhodes (Andy Griffith) for her radio station at a local Jail in town, He soon captured the radio listeners by his Charming personality and his fast wit. He soon became an over night success, but things start to go down hill after he gets a taste of power and fame. I recommend this movie to anyone. It’s a bundle of laughs and tears and a timeless classic for the generation of today.
